Trip to Green

Welcome to the Trip to Green Project Page!

US 50 Trip to Green - Congestion Management and Resiliency Strategy Project (CIP No. 42502)
Since the success of the Trip to Green Pilot Program, the City of Placerville and El Dorado County Transportation Commission used the results of the pilot program to help secure grant funding for permanent infrastructure.  The proposed permanent project improvements will include Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology, a series of features like automatic barriers, barricades, and channelization devices that will allow Highway 50 to flow safely and freely during the implementation of Trip to Green.  The proposed project also includes a pedestrian overcrossing at Highway 50 and Canal Street.  The grant funding that was secured is through the Local Transportation Climate Adaptation Program and is for the environmental, design and right of way phases of the project.  Construction funding has not yet been identified.

The City Council approved an Agreement for Engineering Services with Wood Rodgers to begin the Project Approval and Environmental Documentation phase of the project: Staff Report from the 1/14/25 City Council Meeting

What was the Trip to Green Pilot Program?

The "Trip to Green" project in 2022 was a pilot program conducted over three weekends to test the concept and evaluate the effectiveness of setting all eastbound and westbound traffic signals to "green" on Highway 50. To ensure safe travel, northbound and southbound movements across US 50 at Canal Street, Spring Street (State Route 49), and Bedford Avenue were prohibited, allowing only emergency vehicle access. Right turns in and out were allowed at Spring Street, Center Street, and Bedford Avenue.

The concept was tested on the weekends of August 6-7, 2022, September 3-5, 2022, and October 1-2, 2022.
