LOCAL CANDIDATES

Two (2) Placerville City Council Member seats are up for election this November, 2024.  If you are interested in running for one of these full, four-year terms of office (ending November 2028), please contact Regina O'Connell (Filing Official for the City of Placerville) at roconnell@cityofplacerville.org or (530)642-5531 to make an appointment to receive important information and required paperwork.  Appointments will be scheduled between July 15, 2024 and August 9, 2024.

City Council meetings are held twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m. (the second meetings in July and December have often been cancelled to allow for staff vacations).  Various special meetings also occur throughout the year.  City Council members receive a monthly stipend of $353.00, they are enrolled in CalPERS, and receive full medical benefits.  City Council members also serve on County and multi-agency commissions and boards; however, they are not compensated for participation on these bodies.

BECOMING A CANDIDATE

To qualify as a candidate for a seat on the City Council, you must reside and be registered to vote within the jurisdiction (incorporated City limits) at the time nomination papers are issued.  More specifically, you must be 1) at least 18 years old; and 2) a U.S. citizen; and 3) a Placerville resident; and 4) registered to vote in the city; and 5) you must not be on parole or serving time for a felony conviction.

Becoming a candidate for public office means that information about you will become a matter of public record.  With a few exceptions, this includes any and all documents submitted to the City during the course of the election.  As such, these documents must, by law, be available to the public for inspection and/or copying.

To become a candidate, you must first be issued a nomination paper which specifies the office you are seeking.  The nomination paper must be obtained in-person at 3101 Center Street, Placerville, CA  95667 (City Hall, Administration department) between July 15, 2024 and August 9, 2024.   A number of additional forms are also required to be filed.  Once the nomination paper/signatures are returned, the City Clerk's Office will forward your nomination paper to the El Dorado County Elections Department to compare the names, addresses and signatures with voter registration records.  At least 20 signatures (from individuals registered to vote within City limits) must match the voter registration records for you to qualify as a candidate.

COST

There is no cost to file nomination papers.  Candidates who choose to have a candidate statement printed in the voter's guide shall agree to pay $305.  An additional charge of $401 applies to statements published in Spanish.  If a candidate chooses to not submit a candidate statement, their name will still appear on the ballot.
